Elba Raquel

I have an AS in Design from Evergreen Valley College, a BFA in Illustration from the Academy of Art University, and an MA in Education from Santa Clara University. I am an Art Teacher at Latino College Preparatory, a freelance artist, and part of a mural performance group called Together We Create. My freelance work is recognized by my bright colors and rhythmic compositions that I describe as “fantastic realism.” In my current professional work I have been exploring the idea of using black and white figures to portray physical realism juxtaposed with bright color as a way to depict symbolic narratives that illuminate a deeper understanding of the desaturated figure being represented. The interwoven sections of unsaturated and saturated color both indulge the viewer in the nostalgia of the past and the ever changing future, creating a flow of present energy that needs to both remember its roots while daring to dream big. I work in all mediums ranging from pen and ink, oils, pastels, watercolors, yarn, and acrylic (amongst others) but while working on murals the best mediums to work with are spray paint and house paint. I always pride myself in making sure everything I create is done with excellence in mind. No matter how large or small a project is, my priority is to create art that is not just aesthetically pleasing but also exceptionally well executed and technically sound while keeping the integrity of the project’s concept intact. Notable achievements as an artist include: Having two murals in San Jose (Sacred Heart Community Center and Mas Dulce Soul's Shop), having a live painting art collective that has painted in a plethora of local events (Together We Create), being published in a Breaking Bad Book of a collection of fanart (2021), having a published book cover ("Post Traumatic Quest") 2020, and being a window installation artist for the Womanhood Project (2022).

Interior Design

A majestic close-up of a quetzal to represent residents as they immerse themselves in the patio garden. Leaves compliment color of wall.

Exterior Design

Using the existing architectural designs, the orange extends from the balconies to create overall harmony with the building.

The dynamic composition of the birds represents freedom as the quetzal birds are flying without constraint.
