“I identify as a third generation Chicano (Mexican-American) born and raised in San Jose. I felt it was important to recall the agricultural roots of the valley. My grandparents migrated here from Arizona and Mexico in order to follow the agricultural seasons and work the fields of California during the 50s and 60s. These opportunities paved the way for my family to grow their roots culturally and economically here in the South Bay. I am a proud beneficiary of their hard work and labor. I acknowledge my privileged position as an artist and educated person living here in the region. Their sacrifices made it possible for me to be here today and share with you this art concept.
The piece I created acknowledges the cultural roots and advancements of Silicon Valley. The hands open up, offering roses of passion, love, and honor for the city. The hands also represent the diverse communities that have built up the city since its founding. I use a lot of hand symbology in my work as the magic creators of abstract and cultural ideas. Within the imagery, the word “Comunidad” (community) refers to the Latinx communities that reside in the South Bay while continuing to work and develop the city from the ground up. The scene depicts people walking through the agricultural past into the horizon of the future towards the center of innovation found at the city’s core.” — Rayos Magos
About Rayos Magos
I am a mixed media artist, working with multiple mediums ranging from printmaking, drawing, painting, and collaging. My work is narrative in style and characterized as bold, graphic, and colorful. The narrative themes that emerge out of my work are broad or specific. My approach to my artwork is sometimes more calculated with sketches, thoughts, writings, and influences related to psychology, philosophy, spirituality, and human connection. At other times my work can be more intentionally playful, enjoyable, and aesthetically pleasing to the eyes.
I typically work by creating a series of works for extended periods of time in order to develop themes and process their meaning. I allow color palettes to arise and/or attempt to embody an emotion, sensation, or feeling that is captured in the imagery. If one was to look at my work they might say that it is “dynamic” as it ranges in mediums and topics. Oftentimes, I use symbols, patterns, repetition, and textures to convey messages that I want the audience to experience upon viewing my work. I have a broad range of experience, from working independently in my studio, to creating community installations and murals in the Bay Area. I have expertise and background in project development and project completion.
